Geography/Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Applications:
Project Development
CRN 72689, 76767

Monday/Wednesday, 7:00-9:50 PM, Science Room 113

Instructor: Paul Van Zuyle paul@westlakeGIS.com

What the course Catalog says:

Prerequisite: GEOG V26
Recommended preparation: GEOG V22

This course is an exploration of various Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques and concepts through an active learning approach. Students will define, propose, design and execute a project that will incorporate GIS skills and knowledge. Field trips may be required. May be taken for a maximum of 4 times.

What this really means:

The primary goal of this course is to equip you with the skills to start and finish a small GIS project. In this class, you will:

  1. Read about GIS project management
  2. Propose a project that you can complete in 8 weeks (tiny!)
  3. Collect and enter data
  4. Perform GIS operations and analysis
  5. Record your work
  6. Present your results

A project must consist of an activity which requires the use of GIS. You may work on a project alone or with fellow students in this class. Group projects are encouraged. The topic may come from your work or any other source. Small projects with small datasets are almost always the best choice for this class.

Each meeting the instructor will make a short presentation on selected aspects of GIS and project management. The rest of the class will be spent on discussions, other presentations and individual work in the GIS lab. In addition, this class will require some additional effort outside of class and laboratory hours, depending on the size and scope of your project.

This Fall, the class will incorporate discussions of advanced tools for automating and documenting GIS projects, including the Model Builder in ArcGIS desktop.
